Baby boomer gripe - Library Lovers (NOT)

I love the library - always have, even as a kid.

I go to my local library often to work/see what's new/use the computer/read magazines etc.

There are, of course, many others who love their library(s) and then there are others who have no concept of what a library is.

Scenario 1:
  1. Row of people working quietly using library computers
  2. Row of people working quietly in cubicles on own computers and ipads etc
  3. Many people quietly reading, browsing . . .
Enter person wishing to use printer.

Loudly states after making everyone aware of her prescence 'how do I turn on the computer?'. 'What's the password?'.

Mobile phone rings. 'Hi, I'm in the library and can't get the . . . . . . . computer to work. I only want to print . . . . . .'

Gentle, patient soul in next cubicle  to 'library lover (not)' assists and suggests she talk to the librarian. Librarian arrives for one of many visits.

Great news - person is on the computer! We all sign with relief.

Oh oh! Mobile phone rings. 'Yes, I am at the library trying to print. Can't get the . . . . . . . printer to work.'

You get the picture . . .

Person finally prints required pages and a COLLECTIVE sign of relief engulfs that section of the library as the person departs.

Scenario 2:

Guy sitting at library computer thought he was in his office. Used his mobile phone to talk to many people regarding jobs, legal matters, advice and TALKED VERY LOUDLY - why not!

Even got them to ring back on his mobile - why not!

  • Are such people not aware we can hear them?
  • Do they realise we can't concentrate on anything much but their business activities - not that we want to know, but we don't have a choice.
Young guy next to me mumbles and leaves. Obviously has had enough of mighty mouth.

A few days later I was reading an article in a weekend newspaper entitled 'suburban tweets'.
The gist of one of the tweets was noisy libraries and I wondered if this had been written by the guy that had been sitting next to me.
 _______________

Most people get the fact that libraries are QUIET places.

There is a small sign in front of each computer asking people to take phone calls away from the area.

Isn't this just courtesy? People could always change phone settings?

Possible positive solutions:
  • Perhaps look at financial viability of locating a small printer near reception desk for one-off printing jobs.

  • Staff could send a message to the computer screen of people like 'mighty mouth' asking for quietness or even come over in person and discuss?

  • No more small signs - use BIG VISUALS please - or suggest that the use of the local newsagent's photocopier.

I have a few, well, yep, not so positive solutions that come to mind which I won't detail here - good job I don't work in management at the local library!!!

You get the picture . . .
